[Gallery visit 5] Guest Speaker for Fine Art - Emma Talbot

I found Emma's work to be quite quirky and playful. She discussed how the death of her husband, know making her a widow has inspired a lot of her work, which I found to be fascinating that a sad time in her life she has turned it into a positive by painting the memories she shared with him.

Emma Talbot - The MAC:

After seeing her talk I decided to go see her work in person. Some of her work was being exhibited in The MAC.

Out of the tree pieces of her work on display I loved this one the most due to its vibrancy in contrast with the troubling times the art work is displaying.

As expected, her work was even better in person, it was filled from beginning to end with heart-felt detail.

Changing the Appearance of Photographs

Photograghs were projected onto the screen and we used various methods in order to change its natural appearance.

Adding a layer cut out in order to frame it.

Projecting in onto smaller things.

Perspective projection - and image of the ground projected to that level.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Sculpture

We got a short presentation on the various materials that can be used for Sculpture. Classic materials like clay, stone and even wood. More modern day sculptures can be made from the likes of wire, paper or even sand, you can make a sculpture of just about anything.

Paper sculpture of a pear.

Gravity Sculpture using scrap wood.

Drop the wood and trust gravity's outcome.

I let the wood fall naturally and i photographed the outcome.

Wire Sculpture:

*Sadly I was unable to attend the trip to Helen's Bay as I had to go home Thursday evening for a doctors appointment on Friday morning as I have a infected ear drum.*

Animation lecture

Animation was one of the lectures I was most excited for as I'm extremely passionate about the subject. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the roots of Chinese animation as I was expecting to hear about classic animation studio like Disney or Pixar.

Ink-wash Animation 'Feelings of Mountains and Water'
1950- 1970 First Golden Era of Chinese Animation.

This was my favourite animations we were shown was 'Feelings of Mountains and Water' it was so stunningly portrayed created using ink-wash. The soundtrack and foley sounds used through out this short worked hand in hand with the motion picture and drove the narrative forward.

I found out that Chinese animation are heavily inspired by Chinese paintings, adapted from culture and elements of Peking Opera.

Photography Class.

In this class we got a short PowerPoint on how important photography is for a course like this. The presentation showcased how lighting and positioning play a key role in a great photo.

They split us up into groups in order to recreate a one of the various photographs they had in a pile. We as a group selected an image and then had to go recreate a modern day version of it.

[Gallery visit 2.] The Picture Gallery

The Picture Gallery was filled floor to ceiling with art by various artist. All of the work that was displayed was up for sale. The artwork that stood out to me the most I photographed and researched more about the artist and more of the work that they produced.

One of the artists that stood out to me the most was Dennis Orme Shaw. The fade from a scenic painting to an array of colours that compliment the painting beautifully. I find Shaw's work quite unique with his use of vibrant colours.
Dennis Orme Shaw was born in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone in 1944 and studied at the Belfast College of Rt (1962-1967).  He has since been presented wioth the Silver Award Medal from the Royal Ulster Academy and is exhibiting widely across Ireland.

The Picture Gallery was a great experience due the wide variety of artist that it carries - its a great place to go for research to get amazing artist names to look into their line of work.
