The World of the Dying Brain - Group number 2.

We got put into different groups this week, I am now in a group with Caitlin, Emma, Natasha and Paul. The previous group decided to create a world within a dying brain. It is floating in a person’s skull with a black background. Dementia is the cause of the brain’s eventual death.

They had basically made each lobe of the brain into a country in charge of different aspects of the brain. This is how they portrayed each lobe...

Frontal lobe - The Capital: where all information enters the neurone tree to be sorted and sent off to the different parts of the brain for storage.

Occipital lobe (Occipitia): Creativity runs free within this part of the brain.

Parietal lobe (Piriat): Monks live in Piriat, they are farmers and supply the food to every lobe in the brain. They are the protectors of knowledge.

Temporal lobe (Tempora): 5 pillars protruding from the ground made of books containing your memories.

The pituitary gland (The Pit): Contains evil/deadly diseases that are looking to escape and go on the hunt for their purpose and meaning. They end up destroying everything in their path when they soon realise they weren't suppose to be apart of the brain.
Previous groups work.

Our task was to just further/add to the idea that had already been created in order to make more sense of the world. Due to it being such a vast world with different sections our group decided to designated people to a lobe of the brain. I began to work on Tempora.

My Take on Tempora:

Tempora - It is in charge of the human memories.

Based on how many years you've lived the more vaults there are.
One vault contains the memories you have created for that year of your life.

The older you get the more those vaults break down and crumble away representing the mind slowly losing itself.

I then started to think what the inhabitants of Tempora would look like and what their housing would look like.

Next Weeks Task - Design a character for the world.

During class Conann got everyone to come up with a character for their world and draw it within a 15 minute time limit. Then once we had finished our drawings we had to choose one from our group for inking.

The homework task was for our group to create a creature for your world - As a group we decide to focus more on what creature would live in the pit.

I first came up with a leech type creature that would be able to suck the life out of anything it laches onto. I did like this design but I wanted to be a bit more creative and think outside the box like Connan said.

I wanted to help myself create a visual for an unusual creature, so I created a mood board to help inspire my design.

Design and Thinking.

Task - Come up with a couple of ideas to get you started in order to build a world with your group. My first group was with Katy, Ben and Hristo.

Rough Idea 1:

Dinosaurs Never Became Extinct.

  • Set in our world - current day.
  • They live along side us.
  • They are treated like people in the sense that they have jobs eg working on a construction site; they would help carry and transport heavy things.
  • Smaller less harmless dino could be pets.
  • Larger more dangerous dinos (T-rex) would live on the more rough environment like no man's land.
  • The hotter countries would be covered in vegetation, giant leaves and trees everything will appear a lot larger than usual.
  • Every weather and temperature is over exaggerated due to the dinosaurs.

Influence:

The Flintstones inspired my initial idea as they are humans that live along side dinosaurs. Although, unlike The Flintstones my idea is set in current day. So how has our world adapted having dinosaurs living along side us. Would it make life easier? Would it eventually cause chaos?

Rough Idea 2:

Humans No Longer Exists On Earth.

  • Post-apocalyptic feel.
  • All buildings and cities remains the same except building they are all over grown with vegetation and are crumbling with having aged over time.
  • The animals kingdom has taken over every country.
  • Every animal that is the "National Animal' for each country is the leader of that state/country so for example Australia - Kangaroo/Canada - Beaver/China - Panda etc.
  • Main cities will be renamed for example New York would be Concrete Jungle.

Influence:

Chosen Idea: The Genius.

Hristo came up with the amazing idea of a world based round your Genius.
A genius was believed in Roman mythology to be the 'individual instance of a general divine nature that is present in every individual person, place, or thing. Much like a guardian angel the genius would follow each man from the hour of his birth to the day he dies. Genii are often viewed as protective spirits. They usually have the same traits as the person they are protecting.'

What is a Genius?
They are a part of you that you don't realise is there, they help put ideas in your head but still leaving you with the power to say yes or no. Their goal is to leave their world because it is so chaotic and confusing. They believe they will eventually merge with their human by providing them with good ideas.

First coming up with the aesthetic of the Genii who inhabit this world.
Below are rough sketches showcasing the possible appearance of the genius and how the character becomes more distorted due to the bad ideas they put in your head.

Final character design:

In terms of colour we decided as a group that it would be best if the bad genius slowly was drained of his colour in order to depict the life almost being sucked out of him. With regards to the bad genius appearance the more bad the idea the more distorted it will become.

What does their world look like?
Their world is heavily inspired by M.C Esher. The world is very confusing and is like a giant optical illusion making it very difficult for the genii to get around.

Alice in wonderland concept art by David Revoy.
I loved the imagery of this piece and how it flows seamlessly together between each scene in the drawing. From the steam of the teapot intertwining with the smoke of the caterpillar; to the tree merging with the long path showcasing the great distance the rabbit has ran. It tells a different story as your eyes makes their way around the image. That is what we would hope to achieve when creating the chaotic world for the geniuses - in order to make the viewer have to look twice at something in order to make full sense of what is happening.

My idea of housing system for this world.
Also, Based on how well they perform / do things they walk through like a security scanner and it puts them in a new sanction (or housing of candle) based off your percentage performance for that day. Ranked from good to bad the worse they look the worse the living conditions (reflecting clouded judgment and bad decision) so the better they look the better they live making it easier for them to think up new ideas. It's So chaotic they are constantly trying to do better so the saying ‘everyone deserves a second chance’ they can increase their percentage to go back to nicer living making it easier for them to be more creative.
